Barcelona’s overcrowded front line

Memphis Depay has become Barcelona’s latest signing joining Barcelona’s overcrowded front line. Ronald Koeman has been chasing Memphis for some time. However, his arrival means Koeman now has eight players in the three front positions.

Memphis joins Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Francisco Trincao, Martin Braithwaite, Ansu Fati and Sergio Aguero.

Overcrowded front line

This could be embarrassing for the coach who may have difficulties choosing a front line. It is actually a lot of options. Assuming Koeman wants two options in each position, there are still two extra options.

Messi’s renewal

The big question is indeed regarding Lionel Messi’s future. Everything at Camp Nou depends on that. And no one wants him to be leaving.

The consensus is that the Argentine star will remain in Barcelona. But no agreement yet.

Griezmann’s role

There are rumors that the Blaugrana will listen to offers for the Frenchman.

The problem, however, is that the club still has 72 million euros in Griezmann’s transfer fee to pay. And, the player earns 20 million euros a year. Few clubs can afford this level of financial commitment.

Dembele decision

After a positive season, things are starting to look ominous for Dembele’s future as a Barcelona player.

The club is eager to extend his contract. It expires in 2022, but the player is in no hurry to do so.

If there is no agreement soon, the club will actively seek to sell the French player

The return of Ansu Fati

After a strong start to the 2020/21 season, Ansu Fati missed most of the season due to a knee injury. If he starts where he left off on his return, it will be like a new signing and the best the club can achieve.

The club won’t even consider selling him at the moment. Everyone is just hoping he can get fit and stay injury-free.

Braithwaite destination

Aguero’s arrival essentially leaves Braithwaite without a position in the squad. It is likely that he will leave. His already rare moments seem to disappear with this number of players in an already overcrowded front line.
