Enrique apologizes to Spanish fans after officially leaving the national team
Luis Enrique said he regrets Spain’s early exit from the round of sixteen of the Qatar World Cup at the hands of Morocco, which caused his departure as coach of the Matador following the defeat to Morocco in the round of sixteen in the 2022 World Cup.
The Spanish Football Federation moved quickly to bring in a successor to Enrique, with Luis de la Fuente, head coach of Spain’s under-21 national team, being chosen to take over.
Enrique wrote in a tweet through his official account on the social networking site “Twitter” Thursday: “It all started four years ago, and it passed quickly.”
“I can’t help but feel a great deal of gratitude to those who signed me twice, to all the members of the Spanish Football Federation who shared experiences of all kinds, certainly to the players who have been role models in their lives, attitude and loyalty to the idea they have embraced and seriously. I’m sorry I couldn’t help more and it was very special to be a part of this.
He concluded his remarks by saying: “It is time to say goodbye and in those cases just a little thought last and not the last and this is for the fans who have united in their support for us in all good and difficult times, especially in the most weak moments and that what the team needs at the time of weakness is support in all its meanings so that Luis de la Fuente can achieve everything he aspires to.”
