Is Saudi Arabia Money “Sportswashing”

Saudi Arabia extended its hosting of the Spanish Super Cup paying astronomical sums of money amounting to 30 million euros annually.

According to Marca, Saudi Sports Minister Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal announced the renewal of the contract for an additional 3 years. There is also the possibility of renewal for another 4 editions of the tournament.

The new agreement gives the Spanish Federation 30 million euros annually.

In fact, Saudi Arabia had the right to organize the Spanish Cup 3 times, starting from 2019. The last one will be in January 2022 for the past season 2020/2021.

According to observers, Saudi Arabia is paying astronomical money for sportswashing. And that includes hosting large sports and entertainment events and paying huge sums of money.

The Kingdom is witnessing a state of financial and administrative corruption. Also, it wants to cover up the violations against human rights and freedoms.

Human rights organizations oppose the establishment of major sports tournaments in Saudi Arabia. Since, this would improve its image. Especially after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

It is noteworthy that the Spanish Super in its current form began to be applied in the version hosted by Saudi Arabia in 2020. Four teams participate in a semi-final stage. And the winner of each match qualifies for the final.

The winning team and runner-up of the League participate in the tournament, along with the Copa Del Ray champion and runner-up.

The Spanish Super will take place in January 2022, in Saudi Arabia.

Barcelona announced, on its website, that it will face Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals. Whereas, Atletico Madrid will play against Athletic Bilbao.
