The 2021/202 Champions League returns to action this week with the second leg of the Round of 16 matches kicking off on Tuesday with a thrilling clash at Anfield as Liverpool host Serie A champions Inter Milan and look to reach the quarter-finals.

Liverpool are the first favorites to win, after winning 2-0 in the first leg at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium last month with two strikes by Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in the second half.

Since then the Reds have won each of their five games in all competitions, most recently beating West Ham United 1-0 in the Premier League and they will have to watch out for complacency and focus on getting the job done professionally.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan have seen a drop in form in recent weeks that threaten to derail their campaign before the end of this week and Simone Inzaghi’s men have been running a five-match winning streak in all competitions, including the defeat by Liverpool.

However, they were back on winning ways on Friday night when they thrashed Salernitana 5-0 in Serie A and will hope to pass that momentum forward to Anfield and make an unexpected comeback.

Ahead of today’s heavyweight game Tuesday evening with a Champions League quarter-final spot at stake, The Hard Tackle will take a big look at both teams.

Team news and tactics

In a major boost for Liverpool as Roberto Firmino, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip trained before the game and are vying for the pick against Inter Milan, Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to make many changes to the side that picked up a hard-fought win over West Ham over the weekend.

Alisson Becker should guard the Reds as usual while Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson are expected to retain their positions in defense and the returning Matip could get a nod at Ibrahima Konate alongside Van Dijk at the heart of the defence.

Fabinho will anchor the midfield and seek to limit the influence of Inter Milan’s main playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu, will have the backing of captain Jordan Henderson, and the once again shining Thiago should get a nod in the third midfield and look to dictate play.

Harvey Elliott and Naby Keita could get second-half minutes if Liverpool seal the deal early in the game.

Firmino has been out of action for a while, and Klopp may not be in a hurry to return, and the coach can continue with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Luiz Diaz as a three striker on Tuesday evening, and Diogo Jota and Firmino could come at some point in the second half.

Possible formation 4-3-3:

Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dyck, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago, Salah, Mane, Diaz

Inter Milan will have to dispense with the services of midfielder Nicolo Parilla, who will be absent due to suspension and Alexander Kolarov is unavailable after he was not registered in the Champions League knockout stages.

Ivan Perisic, who missed the first division match against Salernitana, returned to the competition, which will strengthen Simone Inzaghi.

Given the Nerazzurri’s impressive performance last time out, the manager is unlikely to make much of a tweak to his squad.

Handanovic is certain among the sticks as he will be protected by a three-man defensive unit from Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij and Alessandro Bastoni who will finish their job against Liverpool’s attack.

Denzel Dumfries and return Perisic should play the role of full-back at Inter Milan while they are known for their attacking qualities. The duo will be tested defensively by the Liverpool defenders who will push forward at every occasion.

Marcelo Brozovic will hold the key to Inter Milan in midfield and denying him access to the ball could cut off a major path for the players and Hakan Calhanoglu will also be central to the Nerazzurri’s chances of a comeback on Tuesday night and Arturo Vidal should be third in midfield with Barilla left out.

Lautaro Martinez, who bounced back to scoring ways in the last game, and Edin Dzeko should form an attacking partnership for the Serie A champions against Liverpool.

Possible formation 3-5-2:

Handanovic / Skriniar / De Vrij / Bastoni / Dumfries / Vidal / Brozovic Kalhanoglu Perisic / Martinez / Dzeko
