Mourinho: Roma did not deserve to win five against CSKA and we are still building a team

Jose Mourinho, coach of the Italian club Roma, confirmed his dissatisfaction with the performance of his players, despite the broad victory over CSKA Sofia, Bulgaria, by five goals to one.

This is in the match that brought the two teams, Thursday evening, at the Olympic Stadium, in the framework of the first round of the third group of the group stage of the European Conference League.

Mourinho said after the victory over CSKA Sofia:

“I am happy with the win, but I am not happy with the quality of the play. We did not deserve to win 5-1. Our midfield lacked strength, and we lost defensive matches. I can’t say that we played badly, we are still building our team.”

He continued:

“The backs did not press hard on the opponent, we made some defensive mistakes, Pellegrini and Shumorodov are working very hard, I won’t say that we were bad but we don’t deserve to win five.”

Mourinho continued:

“We have to be more competitive, that day in a training match I was screaming ‘One minute left’, the ball went out and one of the players of the 1-0 winning team went for it! I told him what to do? He told me I want to enjoy, I told him ‘Enjoy It’s a win, don’t be a fool!”.

On achieving the sixth win in a row since the beginning of the season, he said: “Just as 5 is not 50, even 6 victories is not 60. Our group is strong and we are truly building a team.”

On the future of the team’s star, Lorenzo Pellegrini, he noted:

“Pellegrini told me that in the next few days he will sign his renewal contract with Roma.”

The visitors took an early lead in the tenth minute through Yannick Feldshut.

Roma responded with two goals from outside the penalty area, through both Lorenzo Pellegrini in the 25th minute and Stephan El Shaarawy in the 38th minute.

Roma scored two goals from outside the penalty area in a European match for the first time since October 2017 in the Champions League against Chelsea.

In the second half, Pellegrini scored his second and third personal goal for Roma in the 62nd minute, and defender Gianluca Mancini added the fourth goal in the 82nd minute.

Young English striker Tammy Abraham finished Roma’s goals in the 84th minute.
