Simeone’s days are numbered at Atletico Madrid after the Champions League farewell

Spanish reports suggested that Argentine coach Diego Simeone would not enter the Rojiblancos management plans during the preparations for the next season, amid confirmation of the departure of the coach in light of the negative results achieved by the team at the local and continental levels during the current year.

Simeone is living his worst period in Atletico, since he took over in 2011, succeeding Gregorio Manzano, as the Argentine coach’s contract will expire in the summer of 2024, and his future is still unclear with the Madrid club.

The Cadena Ser network said that there are ongoing negotiations by the management of Atletico Madrid to replace Simeone, but the obstacle remains in paying the penalty clause in his contract, which amounts to 14 million euros.

The report indicated that the name of Marcelino Garcia Toral is a candidate to succeed the “Chollo” in the leadership of the team, in addition to Unai Emery.

Atlético Madrid was eliminated from the European Champions League, occupying the last place, to fail even to complete its continental campaign in the European League competition.

Atlético Madrid, led by coach Diego Simeone, failed to snatch the qualifying card for the European League, which Bayer Leverkusen, who finished his Champions League campaign in third place, decided.

The Spanish team Atlético Madrid is bottom of Group B with 5 points, to come behind third-placed Bayer Leverkusen with the same balance of points, but the German team outperforms the goal difference only.
