UN praises Qatar’s role in major sporting events

The United Nations launched “the Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events” as the first international document related to sports safety and security standards.

This comes within the implementation of the UN project under its broader title which is “the Global Programme on. Security of Major Sporting Events. And Promotion of Sport and Its Values as a Tool to Prevent Violent Extremism.”

This was launched in June 2019 by the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office in partnership with the. International Centre for Sport Security as a technical partner for the project.

In addition, The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations are involved in the implementation of the project.

This came as a result of the second United Nations Counter-Terrorism week which took place at its headquarters in New York from 21-30 June.

UN appreciates Qatar’s Support to Sporting Events Security

The Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, Vladimir Voronkov, announced the new UN program.

Furthermore, he considered this event as the first of its kind. It is the first program of the UN that targets world sport and assists the member states in hosting major sports events.

Vladimir Voronkov kept praising the role of the State of Qatar, China, and. South Korea which supported the Global Programme on Security of Major Sporting Events.

Moreover, he believed that the new document will be a sustainable legacy that supports the role of member states interested in hosting major sports events.

He thanked the international partners involved in building this legacy, led by the. International Centre for Sport Security, the. United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, the. United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, in addition to the European Council, INTERPOL, and. International Sports Federations such as FIFA and the Olympic Committee.
