Video: Al-Shabab Defender Criticizes the Referee

Al-Shabab defender Mohammed Salem launched a violent attack on the referee of the Al-Shabab and Al-Hilal match, which was held on Friday evening. The match witnessed the dismissal of Al-Shabab player Ever Banega.

Salem strongly criticized Romanian referee István Kovács, who officiated the match, which ended with Al-Shabab losing 5-1.

“This referee is weird,” he said in statements to the Saudi sports channel. “Banega was sent off in a weird way when the incident is not really worth it.”

“It was the decisions of this referee that changed the course of the match,” he added. “But we apologize to our fans.

“The hero is the one who smiles at last,” said Al-Shabab defender. And the league is still long; who won today will lose tomorrow. We must prepare for what is coming.”

He pointed out that despite the “poor performance” of the referee, Al-Shabab had a chance to score the second equalizer against Al-Hilal.

He indicated that Al-Hilal players were more effective by taking advantage of their chances.

Salem apologized to the fans for the humiliating loss in front of Al-Hilal.

The referee gave a direct red card to the Argentinian player Ever Banega in the first half of the Al-Shabab and Al-Hilal match.

The dismissal was due to misconduct by the Argentine star when he returned the ball to the referee.

As a result, Banega will miss the match against Al-Ettifaq in the 27th round of Prince Mohammad bin Salman League.

On the other hand, Carlos Hernandez, the coach of Al-Shabab, apologized to the fans of the team.

The Spanish coach said, in an interview with the Saudi sports channel, that the dismissal of the Argentinian player “was a major turning point” in the match.

He pointed out that the two teams created scoring opportunities, “but Al-Hilal invested them better.”

Moreover, he argued that the suspension, which lasted around 27 days, had taken a toll on Al-Shabab players. As for Al-Hilal, however, they continued playing in the AFC Champions League.

It is noteworthy that Al-Shabab has stopped at 48 points in second place after losing to Al-Hilal.

On the other hand, Al Hilal topped the Saudi Professional League standings table with 51 points.
